A Guide to Getting Through Your First Week with Braces

Traditional metal braces are one of the most reliable ways to straighten teeth. However, they do require some getting used to. In fact, some patients find it challenging to adjust to their treatment. How can you get through your first week with braces as easily as possible? This basic guide provides some useful tips.

Check Everything Before You Leave the Dental Office

The dentist or orthodontist who places your braces wants you to have a successful, easy treatment. Do not be afraid to take a bit of extra time during your braces placement appointment to ask questions. It may be helpful to make a list of questions before you head to the office.

Also, before your appointment concludes, run your tongue over your braces to look for issues like protruding wires or other things that could cause increased discomfort. Additionally, do not be shy about asking for supplies, such as orthodontic wax.

Adjust Your Diet

Braces require some long-term dietary changes. For example, you should avoid sticky and crunchy foods. During your first few days of treatment, you should be even more cautious. Your mouth is likely to be sore, so it would be wise to eat mostly soft foods. Things like pasta, soft breads, and soups are all good choices.

Be Generous with the Dental Wax

Dental wax, also called orthodontic wax, can be extremely useful if your braces begin to irritate the soft tissues in your mouth. Simply take a bit of wax, roll it into a ball, and squish it on the part of your braces that is causing discomfort. It will create a smooth barrier between your orthodontic appliance and your oral tissues.

Rinse Your Mouth with Salt Water

Warm salt water is excellent for reducing oral pain and relieving inflammation. Mix half a teaspoon of salt with one cup of warm water and stir until the salt is dissolved. Then, swish with the mixture for 30 seconds. For optimum effectiveness, repeat this process five or six times a day.

Be Mindful of Your Oral Hygiene

Braces require you to be extra-diligent about oral hygiene. You should brush your teeth after each meal and use a floss threader to clean beneath your braces’ wire. Your efforts will help you to maintain a clean, fresh, and comfortable mouth.

Reach Out for Help if Needed

Do not hesitate to call your dentist or orthodontist if you run into any unexpected concerns with your braces during your first week of treatment (or any time after that, really). They will do all they can to address the issue.

Adjusting to braces can take a little time, but before you know it, your new routine should feel like second nature!
